A further series of demonstrations for the British followed, and, by March 1897, Marconi had transmitted Morse code signals over a distance of about 6 kilometres (3.7\u00a0mi) across\u00a0Salisbury Plain. On 13 May 1897, Marconi sent the first ever wireless communication over open sea \u2013 a message was transmitted over the\u00a0Bristol Channel\u00a0from\u00a0Flat Holm\u00a0Island to\u00a0Lavernock Point\u00a0in Penarth, a distance of 6 kilometres (3.7\u00a0mi). The message read &#8220;Are you ready&#8221;. The transmitting equipment was almost immediately relocated to\u00a0Brean Down Fort\u00a0on the Somerset coast, stretching the range to 16 kilometres (9.9\u00a0mi).&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"fleft\">\n<p class=\"fb-like fb_iframe_widget\" data-href=\"http:\/\/geoview.info\" data-send=\"false\" data-layout=\"button_count\" data-width=\"50\" data-show-faces=\"false\" data-font=\"arial\"><strong>Cable and Wireless Transatlantic Cable Landing Station<\/strong> is next to Brean Sands and is located in Somerset, England, United Kingdom.
